What Are The Best Workout Headphones For The Gym?

11:01 0

If you go the gym regularly, chances are you’ve broken a fair few pair of headphones. So what are the best headphones for the gym?

If you go the gym regularly, chances are you’ve broken a fair few pair of headphones.

I’ve killed multiple pairs in my time, either by drowning them in sweat until they gave up and died or by ripping one of the wires out of the actual earphone during an ill-fated rep.

There are many ways to ruin a good pair of headphones in the gym, which is why you SHOULDN’T wear good headphones to the gym. This lesson sounds simple enough, but it took me an AGE to actually learn it.

I broke my first pair of Bose headphones at the gym, an accident that nearly reduced me to tears – they cost me over £200. Next was a pair of Apple EarBuds, which I wasn’t too fussed about, as, generally speaking, they’re pretty rubbish.

Nowadays, I have a pair of headphones for the gym and a pair of headphones for everything else (basically, when I’m not sweating and/or moving heavy objects).

My go-to headphones for travel, walking, commuting and everything else in between is a set of Bose QC35’s. I’m no audiophile, but these headphones are fantastic. They blew me away when I tested them, so I went out and bought a pair.

For the gym, however, I wanted something a lot cheaper, so in the event they broke, highly likely given my track record, I wouldn’t mind too much. Basically, I wanted something under £30/$50.

If you want to be super frugal, though, you should definitely check out my article on the best earbuds you can buy for under a tenner. These headphones aren’t going to win any competitions for overall sound quality and performance, but for the gym they will more than suffice.

All the earbuds on this list cost less than a tenner – with the exception of one, which retails for the princely sum of £12 –, feature call-handling abilities, and, in some cases, are actually really rather good.

They had to have decent sound and they also had to be wireless because, as some of you will know, wires are the devil when you’re deadlifting or squatting.

I tried simple, in-ear-only earbuds, which were very good at the start of a workout, but once the sweat was following they lost traction and, nine times out of ten, fell out. This was no good.

I concluded that I needed a wireless pair of headphones with some kind of strap, so in the event one fell out, it would simply lay across the back of my neck.

Turns out I was right; this, in my opinion, is the best possible design for a pair of gym-only headphones. You get all the benefits of a wireless pair of headphones, just with the added safety of a wire that links them and stops them dropping to the floor when one falls out.

TaoTronics Bluetooth Earphones are the best I have found for £20. They look decent enough, fit really well in my ear, and are available in a range of colours, if that’s something you’re interested in.

To be honest, prior to buying a pair of these I had zero expectations. I just wanted to block out the deafening sound of Kiss FM at my local gym; I wasn’t looking for Bose QC35 levels of performance.

The TaoTronics Bluetooth Earphones don’t offer anywhere close to Bose -levels of sound. How could they? They cost £20! But what they do is offer a simple, cost-effective solution for anyone that doesn’t want to ruin a decent pair of headphones in the gym.

And for £20, you do get quite a lot of bang for your book. I mean, just check out these cool features:

Built-in magnets let you attach the two headphones together when not using, and wear like a necklace around your neck, a convenient way to carry around when you don't need them
Comfortable in-ear design, snug and secure, make sure the headset stay put and your music stays smooth when you are running, cycling, exercising and doing other activities
CVC Noise Cancellation 6.0 technology reduces outside noises, enable clearer microphone sound when talking to your family or friends; you get high quality, hands-free phone conversation even on the street or inside shopping mall
Latest Bluetooth 4.1 technology; easy and fast pairing with smartphones, tablets and other Bluetooth enabled music devices; aptX codec provides pure, CD-like high quality sound for compatible devices.
Works with all smartphone, tablets and other Bluetooth music player. Up to 5 hours of continuous talking / music time and up to 175 hours of standby with a single charge, so you have less time charging and more time doing. Pls. note: Customers should know they need to use a 5V adapter which means the charging output shall be 5V to enable the headphones' normal operation.
As I said, these are not going to compete with a £100 to £300 pair of headphones. They won’t even come close.

But if you’re looking for a decent pair of headphones for the gym that can take a serious licking and still manage to pump out decent sound, you cannot go wrong with a pair of these bad boys.

This is likely why over 5000 people like me have given them a 4.5/5 review on Amazon.

Again, these headphones are all about value for money. They won’t compete with your Bose headphones, but because they’re so cheap, it doesn’t matter if you mangle them in the gym, drench them in sweat, or break them while lifting weights.

30TB SSD disclosed by Samsung

08:03 0

The solid-state drive pictured above may look like any other, but don’t be fooled: Samsung’s PM1643 crams a staggering 30.72 terabytes of storage into the traditional 2.5-inch SSD form factor. That’s enough room for 5,700 full HD movies, Samsung says.

Samsung created its 30TB SSD by combining 32 sticks of 1TB NAND flash packages together, each built with 16 layers of stacked 512Gb V-NAND chips. This drive nearly doubles the capacity of Samsung’s previous champion, which topped out at 16TB.

Whether it’s the world’s largest SSD is up for some debate. Seagate unveiled a 60TB SSD in a fatter 3.5-inch form factor during the Flash Memory Summit in late 2016, but it doesn’t appear to have ever been sold.

The PM1643 is fast, too. It dishes out data at speeds much faster than consumer SSDs, hitting sequential read/write speeds up to 2,100MBps and 1,700 MBps, respectively. (The stellar Samsung 860 Pro SSD, by comparison, is rated for read/write speeds of 560MBps and 530MBps.)

The endurance of Samsung’s 30TB SSD appears just as stellar. It’s got a five-year warranty, rated for one full drive write per day. That means you can replace all 30.72TB of data day-in and day-out for five years straight without expecting a catastrophic drive failure.

Now for the bad news: This monstrous solid-state drive isn’t destined for consumer PCs. The PM1643 is an enterprise drive through and through, kitted with a Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) connection instead of a SATA port for business customers looking to shift away from mechanical hard drives. Prices haven’t been revealed, but expect the cost to match the gargantuan capacity. The 30TB SSD has already started manufacturing with a smaller storage options coming later this year.

Fingers crossed that super-sized SSDs trickle down to the masses sooner rather than later. In the meantime, check out PCWorld’s guide to the best SSDs for no-nonsense buying advice on the greatest consumer storage available, complete with information about what to look for in solid-state drives.

HIGH HEELS CHANGE COLOR WITH THE CLICK OF AN APP

06:33 0

Remember last year, when “smart” ballet slippers pirouetted into our hearts (and headlines)? Well, now a high-tech pair of smart high-heels is strutting onto the wearable fashion scene and, Toto, we’re not in blandsville anymore.

They’re called Volvorii Timeless smart shoes and what’s so special about them is that they change color in the click of a smartphone app (iOS and Android versions to come). Hello, instant customization gratification. Not sure which heels to wear with that little black dress? Need to morph from business casual to nightclub slick, but no time to shift shoes? No stress. Leave it to the Internet of Stilettos.

View image on Twitter
Created by a seven-person Lithuanian startup called iShüu Tech, and originally the brainchild of display technology research scientist Wallen Mphepö, these high-tech pumps are digital chameleons for your fancy feet. They’re made of leather and rubber and outfitted with the hidden circuit board, Bluetooth, and battery components. And, here’s the kicker, they’re pimped out with electronic (e-ink) “paper” that you control with a companion app, altering the look of the flexible digital panel that spans from the top of the toes on up the sides of the pumps.
Depending on what your outfit calls for, or your mood, you can switch the Volvorii’s smart display panel from black to white to a chic Louis Vuitton-inspired black and white pattern. Its ambitious makers, who think they “just might be on the verge of creating a new micro industry for the world,” plan to add more cool pattern choices in the future.

Available in black or white, soft leather-lined Volvorii also comes in two tall heel heights, 3.5 inches,
and 4.5 inches. The battery that powers the display recharges via an included USB wireless charger and takes about two hours to fully juice from zero.
The platform-style pumps launched on Indiegogo on March 12. So far the media darling of a campaign has raised $19,700 of a $50,000 goal, with 20 days to go. If you want a futuristic pair of your own, you’ll have to shell out $249. The $149 and $199 Indiegogo perk packages are already history. The first Volvorri are expected to ship this December, just in time for all those dressy holiday parties.

Get yourself a Sony PS4 with your next phone

06:37 0

Just a few years ago, I vividly remember some of the free gifts being given away with some of the less-popular phones. Usually these would be in the back of newspapers, and you’d find some Nokia B7 Lite (I made up that name) on offer with a “free” TV. Sure, you’d spend quite a bit per month (and you’d end up with a phone you probably didn’t really want), but hey.. a TV!

Now the boys at Sky Mobile are rolling our a new offer for customers buying selected Xperia handsets. Get the handsets on Swap24 and Swap12 plans and you’ll get yourself a PlayStation 4 at no additional cost. Not only that, but they’ll also chuck in Gran Turismo Sport for you to play on your new gadget too! Oh, and if that isn’t enough, anyone purchasing an Xperia phone will also receive a Sky Store voucher, so you can watch a movie for free!

The Sony PlayStation and Xperia bundle is available on the Xperia XA2 and also includes the flagship XZ range of phones. That means you can get the XZ Premium, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact. Prices start from £25 a month for the Xperia XA2, which includes 500MB of data and Unlimited Calls & Texts for Sky TV customers on Swap24.

Sky Mobile uses the O2 masts. They include features such as…

Roll – This lets you roll over unused data into a Sky Piggybank each month. You can then use this whenever you need – for up to three years.
Mix – Create a plan of calls, texts and data that suits you. Change every month.
Save – Sky TV customers get Unlimited Calls & Texts for free.
Swap – The Swap12 and Swap24 contracts let you upgrade your phone every 1 or two years respectively. No need to change contract!

Google Home Max Beats Apple HomePod In Sound Quality Test

05:52 0

Is Google Home Max better than Apple’s HomePod – apparently it is, according to this test

Apple’s HomePod is here and the sole purpose of it, while Apple gets Siri up to task, is to outperform the existing options in the space – Amazon Echo and Google Home – in the sound department.

Apple made a big deal about the sound quality its HomePod would produce. It talked about it at launch and, once reviewers got their hands on it, Apple was careful to ensure that all early reviewers were “on message” – and the message was the sound was awesome.

If you look at any reviews online, you will see that most seem to agree that Apple’s HomePod does indeed serve up excellent sound quality. This sound quality, combined with its design, and the fact it is an Apple product, is why the HomePod costs so much – its pricier than the Google Home Max and the Sonos One.

But here’s the thing: Google’s Home Max is apparently better when it comes to overall sound quality than Apple’s HomePod. At least, that was the finding of Yahoo’s David Pogue, who did a blind test of the Google Home Max, Apple HomePod, Sonos One, and Amazon Echo Plus.

This test wasn’t done on a grand scale, however – Pogue appears to have used a few friends and colleagues, just a handful of regular people. According to Pogue, the majority of those in attendance said the Sonos One was the best, closely followed by the Google Home Max.

Where it gets more interesting, however, is when you consider the price of these devices: Google Home Max comes in at $399, compared to the HomePod’s $349 and the Sonos One’s $199 – so the cheapest is actually the best, followed by the second cheapest.

And Pogue’s test isn’t the only one that has placed Google Home Max and the SONOS One above the Apple HomePod. Consumer Reports recently filed a test which showed the same thing – Apple’s HomePod was not as well liked as the One and Home Max.

Plus, Google Home Max runs Google Assistant and, while it is not perfect, it is LEAGUES ahead of Siri in terms of features and abilities.

Interesting stuff, especially since Google Home Max is quite a bit cheaper than Apple’s HomePod. Ditto the Sonos One, which ships with Amazon Alexa.

Dressed for business, built for partying

In keeping with the minimalist aesthetic of products such as the Google Home Mini and Daydream View ($77.46 at Amazon.com), the Google Home Max demonstrates that twill is the new piano black. The whole front of the speaker is covered in a gray (chalk or charcoal) cloth while the back is a smooth, matte plastic.

Surprise: the Max is big. It dwarfs the Google Home, and is roughly the same size as the Sonos Play:5 at 13 inches wide by 7.5 inches high and 6 inches deep. It tips the scales at a hefty 11.7 pounds, which you'll notice if you tip it vertically to form a stereo pair. I love the magnetic silicone base, which keeps the speaker stable in either horizontal or vertical orientation.

Other features include:

  •  Six onboard microphones for far-field voice control
  •  Two 4.5-inch (114mm) high-excursion dual voice-coil woofers
  •  Two 0.7-inch (18mm) custom tweeters
  •  USB-C input
  •  3.5mm auxiliary input

The top of the speaker incorporates slick touch controls. Swipe left or right for volume, tap to pause or play. It seems that Google has dialed the sensitivity of the touch controls down after high-profile problems with the Home Mini. I had mixed results with adjusting volume, although play/pause seemed to work fine.

Is the Google Home Max the speaker that will tempt audiophiles away from their two-channel systems? In a word, no. This is a single-box speaker, and subject to all the compromises that type of form factor introduces. If you prioritize performance and are trying to decide between a pair of Maxes and a stereo system, the choice is easy -- get a stereo system.

For example, a pair of Q Acoustics 3020s, a Yamaha R-S202 and a Google Chromecast Audio will kick the butt of this system in terms of both dynamics and sound stage. Throw in a Google Home Mini for voice control and you're golden.

But let's say you don't want to bother with separates and value the clean look of a single speaker. If you're mostly doing background listening, my advice is to save the money and get a single Sonos One at half the price of the Max -- or even a Google Home or Mini, if you're on a tighter budget.

For bigger spenders, Google's big speaker is right up there with the Sonos Play:5 in terms of sound quality, and it's now the leading speaker we'd recommend at this price if you want a Chomecast-based multiroom system.
